Come try farmstead cheese and heirloom apples at the Old Stone House Museum's second Cheese & Apple Tasting, October 3rd, 2010. From 11 am-3 pm, the farms will have their wares displayed in the field to the right of the Old Stone House Museum. There will be cider pressing and a Boston Marrow squash competition as well. Thirteen bikers rode in the inaugural Old Stone House Fall Foliage Bike Race, which made a 12 mile counter clockwise loop down Old Stone House Rd., through Brownington Center, then on Ticehurst, Pepin, and Chilafoux, Gaye Hill, Chapdelaine, and Hinman Settler Roads.

Michael Karasinski started out ahead and stayed ahead in the 5K Run, placing first with a time of 18:53.

BROWNINGTON -- The second annual Old Stone House Fall Foliage Race was held on Sunday morning, September 12, with a Half Marathon Run, a 5K Run, a 5K Walk and a 12 Mile Bicycle Race. A brisk breeze did not discourage the 47 participants who raced on mostly dirt country roads with scenic vistas, brightened by early fall foliage.

Nine racers started the Half Marathon a little after 8 a.m., on a route that took them over the Old Stone House Rd., Hinman Settler Rd, Chapdelaine Rd., Ticehurst Rd., Gaye Hill Rd., Chilafoux Rd., and the Pepin Rd. Jason Shafer of Barton, 33, placed first with a time of 1:31:28. Tyler Alexander of Derby, 26, place second, even though he made a wrong turn that took him almost an extra mile, with a time of 1:35:42. Alex Grafton of Newport, 33, was third with a time of 1:46:19. Beverly Tannahill of Westmount, Quebec, 34, was the first woman with a time of 1:48:39, and placed fifth overall.

The other racers started a little after 9 a.m. Thirteen bikers raced on the same course as the half marathoners, but in the opposite direction. This was the first year for the bike race.

Women took first and second place overall. Linda Ramsdell of Craftsbury Common, 46, won with a time of 44:04. Ami English of Glover placed second with a time of 52:41. Oren Martin of Brownington, 57, third overall and first man over the finish line, came in with a time of 54:20.

The next four riders declared themselves a peleton, and came across the finish line with the same time of 1:00:54: Rian Hayman-Jones of Glover,10, Anaka Maher of West Glover, 12, Malakai Maher of West Glover,10, and Dennis Gibson of West Glover, 61. More enthusiastic young riders came in close behind. Aiden,Maher, 8, was eleventh, Asom,Hayman-Jones, 8, placed eighth, and Karamae Hayman-Jones, 12, was tenth.

The 5K course took racers up and back on the Hinman Settler Rd., traversing the high ridge with breathtaking views of Jay Peak and Lake Memphremagog. In the 5K Run, Michael Karasinski of Barton, 18, came in first with a time of 18:53. Larry Allard of Barton, 52, was second with a time of 20:22. Patrick Brogan of Orleans, 23, was third with a time of 20:56. Lindy Sargent, 58, was the first woman across the line, and placed fifth overall, with a time of 24:29. Casey Dearborn of Albany, 31, was the second woman with a time of 25:30. Erin Magoon of Craftsbury Common, 31, was the third woman with a time of 28:23.

In the 5K Walk, Roy Gero of Barton, 71, placed first with a time of 38:28. Women took both second and third. Barbara Grant of Brownington, 55, was second with a time of 40:28. Andie Stratton of Newport, 55, was third with a time of 42:31 Larry Faust of Brownington was fourth overall with a time of 45:43, and Wayne Wheeler of Newport, the oldest participant of all the races, was fifth with a time of 50:21.

Following the events racers enjoyed hot corn on the cob, fresh pressed apple cider, cookies, doughnuts, fruit and plenty of hot coffee. Sponsors of the race included Radiant Floor, Craftsbury Sports Center, Kingdom Trails, Columbia Forest Products, Evansville Trading Post, Juddy's Portable Toilets, Village Sport Shop, Parker Pie, Concept 2 Rowing, Memphremagog Press, Big Bear Real Estate, Lakefront & Country Rentals, Gene Besaw & Associates, Passumpsic Savings Bank, Total Security, Blanchard Oil, Currier's Market, and the Village Bike Shop. Time Travelers Camp, our annual summer day camp for kids ages 8 - 12 years old, is currently taking applications for this years camp! It's being held July 26 - 30, 2010, at the Old Stone House Museum in Brownington. This year's theme is "Mr. Hinman's Road." Time Travelers will walk in the footsteps of Timothy Hinman and the settlers who traveled north on his new road through the forest. Activities will include Wood Craft, Sheep to Shuttle, Blacksmith, Hearth, and Potter's Trade.

Michael invites you to learn from his long experience as an organic apple grower and shares the scientific basis of apple growing. You will practice pruning and bench grafting. The Matthews Duo -- flutist Wendy Matthews and husband classical guitarist Peter Matthews -- will perform at the Orleans County Historical Society on Sunday, March 28, at 2:00 p.m. The program will open with music from the 20th and 18th centuries, including that of composers Ernst Gottlieb Baron, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Astor Piazzolla. The second half of the concert will feature music composed by 19th century guitarists Napoleon Coste and Mauro Giuliani. The duo will conclude the recital with selections from contemporary composer Robert Beaser's Mountain Songs, a collection of pieces based on folk music popular during Alexander Twilight's lifetime.

This combination workshop will give an overview of various techniques and physiology behind grafting and pruning of cold climate tree fruits. Our annual Holiday Open House at the Old Stone House Museum is coming up November 28th, 2009! Held from 10 am to 3 pm at the Samuel Read Hall House, this event will have hearth cooking, live music, cookie making, hand crafts, wreath making, and refreshments.

The Museum shop will be set up in one of the rooms with books, toys, pottery, etc. for sale. Great stocking stuffer ideas!

Well folks, it's that time of year again!

Days and nights are getting cooler and the daylight is getting shorter. Winter is on its way, so the Old Stone House Museum is going to be closing! We close annually on October 15th, so our last day of tours for the 2009 season will be next Thursday.

Come out to the Museum one last time this year, or maybe for your first time! There are four floors of interesting and amazing history to enjoy. Make sure you dress warmly: the Museum isn't heated. Whatever the case may be, we welcome you!

Northeast Kingdom History Day

Rules and Objectives 2009

For Students and Teachers, Grades 6 through 12

1. All entries shall state an initial question to be answered by research. Research should be “Inquiry Driven” Title of Entry should reflect the question.

2. Themes can be regional, state, national, or global. To continue to the State or National level entries must conform to “The Individual in History” theme for 2009.

3. Research shall include primary sources (written, image, artifact, recorded) and supporting secondary sources. Regional subject choice makes it easier to find primary material.

4. All entries shall include a Process Paper describing research planned and carried out. (2 pg.)

5. All entries shall include an annotated bibliography. List primary and secondary sources used, with short description of source and what information was obtained.

6. Teachers / parent assistance should be limited to guidance and critique. Suggestions are allowed but hands-on help is not acceptable.

7. Deadlines will be Observed (January 10 Commitment, March 5, Project Registrations)

Categories of Entries Open to Individuals & Groups

Exhibit

1. An exhibit is a three dimensional presentation of research. Folding panels are often used. Each project must fit on one half of a 6’ table, or reserve special floor space prior to arrival. Original concepts for exhibit design are encouraged.

2. Inquiry question and Research Conclusions should be presented. Exhibits shall include both graphic and written materials. Images, objects or artifacts should illustrate text.

3. The exhibit may also include recorded sound (2-3 min) if it is an integral part of the content.

4. Music, Science and Art topics from history are welcomed in all categories.

Performance

1. Performances should reference actual events or people, use quotations or evidence derived from primary and secondary source research.

2. The Inquiry question and Research Conclusions should be made clear by the performance.

3. Performance may be between 5 and 10 minutes long.

4. Props and costumes should be historically accurate. There is a 10 minute time limit on set up.

5. Debates are welcomed in Performance category.

Documentary Media

1. An Inquiry question and Research Conclusions should be presented by Media Entries.

2. Documentary Media entries may incorporate video, “PowerPoint” slide shows, sound recordings, filmed or scanned images, or mix media such as narrative, interview and music.

3. The program should be 5-10 minutes long.

4. The bibliography must clearly state from what source each image or sound recording was taken. Copyright requirements must be observed. Credits should be given.

5. All equipment, including camera and editing equipment, must be operated by a student.

6. Entries with significant technical problems can not be judged.

March 26, 2009 Thursday

NEK History Day-- held at IROC arena, Newport VT

10:00 AM

Students arrive at IROC, locate their pre-assigned space, and set up.

Teachers sign in at Registration Desk, and pick up lists and schedule.

11:30 AM

Welcome to all participants

Performance entries give presentations for assembled students and judges

Participants may leave for rest of the day after performances.

12:00 - 3:00 PM

Judges/Evaluators arrive, sign in, pick up their evaluation forms and begin work.

5:00 PM

Judges meet with others on their team to make preliminary decisions

6:00 PM

Students return to IROC, no later than 6, (should eat dinner before arrival)

Interviews, students stand beside their projects awaiting Judges Interview.

Students will have a chance to talk to an interested adult about their work.

After interviews, students may join their families to look at other research projects

Students should visit the prize awards table to look at potential prizes

Collector's Fair Photos

Here are photos from this years Collector's Fair, held February 15, 2009.

Karen MacCloud from Marbleton, Quebec brought her collection of matchbooks. Oddly enough, matchbooks which used to be everywhere and easily collected even by children, are no longer offered by most businesses because smoking is discouraged.

Vivian and Fred Webster made an appearance with just a few things for their huge collection. Fred has a long barn with three levels filled with an amazing collection of antique farm equipment at his farm in Coventry. Fred and Vivian are enthusiastic square dancers, and have volunteered to demonstrate some dances at our upcoming Kitchen Junket and Sliding Party on Sunday, March 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hall House. Burt Porter will start playing the fiddle at 2 p.m. Neal Perry will be giving sleigh rides, and cross country ski trails will be packed around the museum grounds.

Ron Curtiss from Albany displayed his Edison Phonograph from around 1915, and is shown here setting up one of the recorded cylinders to play music. He is engaging the feed screw, which will push the stylus, which rides along grooves in the cylinder. The horn that projects the sound is attached to the stylus, and moves slowly as the stylus picks up the sound from the grooves in the cylinder.

The youngest exhibitors at the fair were the Morris sisters of Barton. Chrisana on the left brought her collection of clowns, and Margaux on the right brought her horses. Between them are other sisters Sabeth and Jalicia who came along to help.

Art Blair, who usually comes to the Collectors Fair and also many of our other events with his rope making tools, brought his collection of Native American arrowheads and tools this time. He collected them from around his family's farm north of Shelburne Pond when he was a boy in the 40's and 50's. The ancient flint tools included drills, scrapers for working wood and hides, a butcher knife, spear points,and a tool for opening up clams. He showed how the people used deer antlers to sharpen their tools. He believes that these tools are between 6,000 and 8,000 years old, left there by people who lived near the shore of modern Lake Champlain after the inland sea dried up after the last ice age 12,000 years ago. Art has pieces that show where they were resharpened to useful points again after an edge was taken off by use. His collection is an impressive indication of a sustainable culture and the quality of workmanship in the every day lives of ancient people.

Polly and Dexter Bennett of East Charleston brought two model Civil War cannons, just like the cannons used at Gettysburg.

Jay and Courtney Mead of North Troy set up and ran their model trains at the Collectors' Fair. They have Lionel trains they got in 1974, and the Commodore Vanderbilt Marx from the 1940's.

Laurel Sweetland had a model of an 1886 Benz Motor Wagon. She and her late husband Robert got it after they went to Germany years ago and saw the Benz Museum in Stutgardt, where there was a full size car.

Our website has been updated!

We have wanted to bring local history to the masses for a long time, and now this process has begun! We have added a local history page, which will contain the history of the towns of Orleans County as well as biographies of men and women from those towns. Our aim is make our website a useful resource for county history.

Please, join us in this endeavor. If you love to write and could write an article about a town or a person, please let us know by calling or emailing. It would be an immense help to us!

We have added another link which we have called Weddings/Functions. In restoring the Samuel Read Hall house, we are now able to rent out a space for special events, such as weddings, showers, or business functions. More information on price and availability will be on the site shortly.

Lastly, we renamed a page. Resources is now called Links to accommodate the different types of sites we have linked to on that page.

Woodcarving: Learn to carve simple three dimensional birds or animals. Woodcarver Allen Yale has designed a class for people with little or no carving experience. Beginning with proper tool sharpening techniques. students will visualize ideas, layout their pattern on wood, cut blanks and begin carving. Basswood and some knives will be provided by the instructor as will tool catalogs for ordering additional tools. Bring lunch, your tools and previous work you wish to share. Papermaking by Hand: Learn techniques for preparation and coloring cotton paper pulp, the secrets of sheet forming and molding forms. Heritage Craft Classes - July 12th - July 18th

The Painted Floor Cloth:
Design and Paint a 36”x28” heavy duty canvas floor cloth. Floor cloths were used in homes in the late 1700s and early 1800s in lieu of carpet. Work under the professional guidance of designer Martha Kinney. to design an original layout or choose one of hers. Students will learn decorative painting techniques and specific tools of the trade. The instructor will provide specially prepared canvas & stencils from her own collection. This is a two day (10 hour) class on Thursday July 17 & Friday July 18. It meets from 10 am- 3 pm both days. A supplies-needed list will be sent at registration or call instructor 644-2422. Class fee is $95 / members $85. Pre-register before July 14

Wood Fired Bake Oven:
Rye & Indian, Birds Nest Pudding and Herb Pie are all recipes Mrs. Twilight might have made when she heated her bake oven in Athenian Hall in 1830. You’ll learn to fire up and use our outdoor oven. Wear sturdy shoes and bring hot mitt. Saturday July 19, 12-4 pm. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register by July 15

Natural Rush & Cattail:
Gather & prepare traditional materials for weaving. If you enjoy plants and the natural world, and would like to make your own natural fiber cord like that used for weaving seats and mats from the early 1600s into the 1800s, this afternoon workshop is for you. Outdoor foray to gather suitable local materials, learn the drying process and methods of preparation and techniques for use. Instructor J. Klappert will demonstrate and students will practice all the steps including seat weaving. Wednesday July 16, 12-4 pm. Materials fee $5. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register before July 13

Scythes & Mowing:
Around the world, through the centuries men and sometimes women have swung some version of the scythe to mow hay for livestock, harvest grain or to clear pastures. Learn about types of blades when to use them and how to sharpen them. Practice on our hay field. Experienced mowers welcome to come share knowledge. Instructor Jim Daniels. Bring your scythe. Basket Weaving :
Interested in making durable and attractive baskets? This introductory class is for you. You will begin and complete a market basket made of splits under the guidance of instructor Carolyn Starr. Sat July 12, 9-12 am. Class Fee $25/members $20 Materials fee $15.
ALSO: Intermediate Basket Class will be held 1-4 pm. Students will begin to weave a Potato Basket. Saturday July 12, 1-4 pm. Materials fee $20. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre register by July 10

Rug Hooking :
Rug Hookers will find inspiration, whether novice or advanced, in the Museum rug collection which will be modeled in this class. Each old rug has a lesson to teach and you will be able to learn some of them with instructor Carolyn Buttolph. This two day (8 hr) workshop will allow you to design an original pattern based on the Museum’s collection or to choose one of the instructor’s patterns. You will become acquainted with basic techniques or receive more advanced guidance if you are ready. Call the instructor to discuss tools and materials at 748-3545.
