Heritage Craft Classes - July 12th - July 18th

The Painted Floor Cloth:
Design and Paint a 36”x28” heavy duty canvas floor cloth. Floor cloths were used in homes in the late 1700s and early 1800s in lieu of carpet. Work under the professional guidance of designer Martha Kinney. to design an original layout or choose one of hers. Students will learn decorative painting techniques and specific tools of the trade. The instructor will provide specially prepared canvas & stencils from her own collection. This is a two day (10 hour) class on Thursday July 17 & Friday July 18. It meets from 10 am- 3 pm both days. Wood Fired Bake Oven:
Rye & Indian, Birds Nest Pudding and Herb Pie are all recipes Mrs. Twilight might have made when she heated her bake oven in Athenian Hall in 1830. You’ll learn to fire up and use our outdoor oven. Wear sturdy shoes and bring hot mitt. Saturday July 19, 12-4 pm. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register by July 15


Natural Rush & Cattail:
Gather & prepare traditional materials for weaving. If you enjoy plants and the natural world, and would like to make your own natural fiber cord like that used for weaving seats and mats from the early 1600s into the 1800s, this afternoon workshop is for you. Outdoor foray to gather suitable local materials, learn the drying process and methods of preparation and techniques for use. Instructor J. Klappert will demonstrate and students will practice all the steps including seat weaving. Wednesday July 16, 12-4 pm. Materials fee $5. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register before July 13


Scythes & Mowing:
Around the world, through the centuries men and sometimes women have swung some version of the scythe to mow hay for livestock, harvest grain or to clear pastures. Learn about types of blades when to use them and how to sharpen them. Practice on our hay field. Experienced mowers welcome to come share knowledge. Instructor Jim Daniels. Bring your scythe. Saturday July 19, 9-11 am. Class Fee $15 / members $10. Pre-register by July 17


Basket Weaving :
Interested in making durable and attractive baskets? This introductory class is for you. You will begin and complete a market basket made of splits under the guidance of instructor Carolyn Starr. Sat July 12, 9-12 am. Class Fee $25/members $20 Materials fee $15.
ALSO: Intermediate Basket Class will be held 1-4 pm. Students will begin to weave a Potato Basket. Saturday July 12, 1-4 pm. Materials fee $20. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre register by July 10


Rug Hooking :
Rug Hookers will find inspiration, whether novice or advanced, in the Museum rug collection which will be modeled in this class. Each old rug has a lesson to teach and you will be able to learn some of them with instructor Carolyn Buttolph. This two day (8 hr) workshop will allow you to design an original pattern based on the Museum’s collection or to choose one of the instructor’s patterns. You will become acquainted with basic techniques or receive more advanced guidance if you are ready. Call the instructor to discuss tools and materials at 748-3545.
