Holiday Open House, Nov. 29

Open House & Holiday Hearth Warming

Saturday November 29, 10am till 3pm

At the newly restored Samuel Read Hall House. Traditional amusements for adults and children will be provided. Also, refreshments, live music, and wreath decorating.

The Museum Shop is Open Tuesday—Friday 10-4, and Saturdays 10-3, through December 20th

Historical Postcards

We have added to our photo albums almost 100 historical pictures from the Orleans County Historical Society's postcard collection. Included are pictures of the towns of Irasburg, Jay, Lowell, Morgan, Newport and Orleans. Other towns will be added in the future, but please stop by now to enjoy pictures of times passed!

Autumn Craft Classes, Sept. 27 - Oct. 25, 2008

Rug Braiding: A special invitation to join our monthly rug braiding group with an introductory session of two classes with Deni Mayer, 447-2614. 10-4 pm on September 27 & Oct 25. Class Fee $30 (members $25) Includes all materials. Call to pre-register by Sept 25









Hike the Hinman: Enjoy an easy autumn walk on the Hinman Settler Road, walking the two miles with Museum staff. Skunk Hollow (Glover - Greensboro) section of this Ancient Road was traveled by first settlers in 1800. FREE admission. Call to sign up. Knitting Intro: Knit wear designer Diana Foster will introduce you to the basics of hand knitting just in time for cold weather. Using circular needles you can learn stitches and designs which require no sewing to complete. Materials, needles supplied by instructor. Call 744-6440 for more information. Adults and teens. Quilt for Baby: Join Quilter Cathie Sheehan on two fun evenings and sew a quilt 39" x 50”. She will guide you through piecing techniques, rotary cutting, sewing and finishing a small coverlet. Woodcarving: Learn to carve simple three dimensional birds or animals. Woodcarver Allen Yale has designed a class for people with little or no carving experience. Beginning with proper tool sharpening techniques. students will visualize ideas, layout their pattern on wood, cut blanks and begin carving. Basswood and some knives will be provided by the instructor as will tool catalogs for ordering additional tools. Bring lunch, your tools and previous work you wish to share. Holiday Wreaths: Held at the Northeast Kingdom Balsam Wreath Shop in W. Glover, Instructor Peggy Day Gibson helps you make a traditional Balsam Holiday Wreath. Using the same technique participants will also make a Harvest Home wreath, using a variety of dried and fresh materials. Bring any special materials you’d like to include. Papermaking by Hand: Learn techniques for preparation and coloring cotton paper pulp, the secrets of sheet forming and molding forms. Suzanne Tanner, a paper artist and educator guides you through some of the creative possibilities and history of papermaking. Recent Website Additions


As you may have noticed, we at the Orleans County Historical Society are making improvements to our website! Not only are we adding information about the historical buildings on our property and starting a web blog, we are uploading photographs to our Photos page as well. We have changed our Kids Page link to Education so that we may include more historical information for the inquiring public.

The kids’ page can still be found under the Education link along the main header. To see our new photos, click on the link under the Old Stone House Museum banner on the right side of the page.

Old Stone House Day - Sunday, August 10

"Horse Power" Working horses with farm equipment, antique carriage exhibit, demonstrations of traditional skills, local history and interactive genealogy exhibits, a mobile harness racing museum, children's activities, local crafts, farmers market, live music, lunch, one-day raffle and more. Admission is free, and free tours of the Old Stone House Museum. Stage coach and carriage rides available for a fee. A donation is requested for parking.

Time Traveler's Day Camp – Mon. – Fri., July 28 – August 1





History based camp for children aged 8 to 12. “Hill and Valley” Hands-on instruction in traditional skills practiced by early Vermonters. Cost $100. Scholarships available. 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Heritage Craft Classes - July 12th - July 18th

The Painted Floor Cloth:
Design and Paint a 36”x28” heavy duty canvas floor cloth. Floor cloths were used in homes in the late 1700s and early 1800s in lieu of carpet. Work under the professional guidance of designer Martha Kinney. to design an original layout or choose one of hers. Students will learn decorative painting techniques and specific tools of the trade. The instructor will provide specially prepared canvas & stencils from her own collection. This is a two day (10 hour) class on Thursday July 17 & Friday July 18. It meets from 10 am- 3 pm both days. A supplies-needed list will be sent at registration or call instructor 644-2422. Class fee is $95 / members $85. Pre-register before July 14


Wood Fired Bake Oven:
Rye & Indian, Birds Nest Pudding and Herb Pie are all recipes Mrs. Twilight might have made when she heated her bake oven in Athenian Hall in 1830. You’ll learn to fire up and use our outdoor oven. Wear sturdy shoes and bring hot mitt. Saturday July 19, 12-4 pm. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register by July 15


Natural Rush & Cattail:
Gather & prepare traditional materials for weaving. If you enjoy plants and the natural world, and would like to make your own natural fiber cord like that used for weaving seats and mats from the early 1600s into the 1800s, this afternoon workshop is for you. Outdoor foray to gather suitable local materials, learn the drying process and methods of preparation and techniques for use. Instructor J. Klappert will demonstrate and students will practice all the steps including seat weaving. Wednesday July 16, 12-4 pm. Materials fee $5. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre-register before July 13


Scythes & Mowing:
Around the world, through the centuries men and sometimes women have swung some version of the scythe to mow hay for livestock, harvest grain or to clear pastures. Learn about types of blades when to use them and how to sharpen them. Practice on our hay field. Experienced mowers welcome to come share knowledge. Instructor Jim Daniels. Bring your scythe. Saturday July 19, 9-11 am. Class Fee $15 / members $10. Pre-register by July 17


Basket Weaving :
Interested in making durable and attractive baskets? This introductory class is for you. You will begin and complete a market basket made of splits under the guidance of instructor Carolyn Starr. Sat July 12, 9-12 am. Class Fee $25/members $20 Materials fee $15.
ALSO: Intermediate Basket Class will be held 1-4 pm. Students will begin to weave a Potato Basket. Saturday July 12, 1-4 pm. Materials fee $20. Class Fee $25 / members $20. Pre register by July 10


Rug Hooking :
Rug Hookers will find inspiration, whether novice or advanced, in the Museum rug collection which will be modeled in this class. Each old rug has a lesson to teach and you will be able to learn some of them with instructor Carolyn Buttolph. This two day (8 hr) workshop will allow you to design an original pattern based on the Museum’s collection or to choose one of the instructor’s patterns. You will become acquainted with basic techniques or receive more advanced guidance if you are ready. Call the instructor to discuss tools and materials at 748-3545. Monday July 14 & Tuesday July 15, 1-4 pm. Materials fee $35. Class Fee $60 /members $55. Pre-register by July 12.

Basket Makers Workshop
